Josephson voltage standard

This method uses the AC Josephson effect to give the unit of voltage (Volt). When microwaves are irradiated onto a Josephson element, regular staircase-like steps appear on the current-voltage curve. The voltage of the nth step counting from the origin is

v is the frequency of microwaves, and can be determined with a relative error of 10 ^-10 or less, making it possible to determine extremely precise standard voltages. In Japan, standard voltages have been determined using this method since 1977. The proportionality constant in this case is given according to the definition of the fundamental physical constants:
