A samurai family from the Kamakura to Edo periods. It began when Yoshitsuna, a member of the Omi Genji Sasaki clan, was given the position of land steward of Kutsuki Manor in Takashima County, Omi Province (Kutsuki, Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture), the place where his great-grandfather Nobutsuna had served in the Jokyu War (1221), and lived in the manor, calling himself Kutsuki. When Ashikaga Takauji rebelled against the Kenmu government, Yoshitsuna's grandson Yoshiuji sided with him, achieving military success in various places and creating an opportunity to become a close attendant to the shogun. After that, the Kutsuki clan served the shogunate as servants and were highly trusted by the Ashikaga Shogunate. In 1528 (Kyoroku 1), Ashikaga Yoshiharu and after 1551 (Tenbun 20), Yoshiteru both sought refuge in Kutsuki Valley, relying on the Kutsuki clan. During the Sengoku period, Mototsuna served Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and in the Battle of Sekigahara, he sided with the Eastern Army and was granted confirmation of his territory by Tokugawa Ieyasu. His descendants served the Tokugawa clan as hatamoto vassals or as feudal lords of Tamba and Fukuchiyama with 32,000 koku of land. In 1884 (Meiji 17), the lord of the former Fukuchiyama domain, Tsunasada, was granted the title of viscount.
