In 1921, Calmette (1863-1933) and Camille Guérin (1872-1961) of the Pasteur Institute in France obtained a weak bacterium, Mycobacterium bovis, from 230 subcultures over 13 years on a potato medium containing 5% glycerin and ox bile. It did not cause progressive tuberculosis lesions when inoculated into animals, and it also provided strong immunity against tuberculosis infection. It was named BCG, an acronym for Bacille de Calmette et Guérin.
