A social movement aimed at improving women's lives, enhancing their status, and liberation. [Overview] The women's movement is a product of modern society. As a result of the collapse of feudal communities and the transformation of the family brought about by the Industrial Revolution, the lives of women who had been subsumed within the family became unstable, while the modern idea of human liberation, which preached freedom and equality, made women aware of the discrimination and dependency they found themselves in. Amid these social and ideological changes, women began to search for their own way of life and seek change in their situation. The women's movement attempted to realize these demands through organized activism. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
