Because of their international scale, it is difficult to hold them every year or every other year, so ideas were developed for biennial exhibitions (triennale) and quadriennial exhibitions (quadriennale). Triennales include the Indian Triennale (founded in 1968) and the Milan Design Triennale (founded in 1923).
