Sparrow hawk (English spelling)

Japanese: ハイタカ(鷂) - ハイタカ(英語表記)sparrow hawk
Sparrow hawk (English spelling)
A bird of the order Accipitridae (Accipitridae) (illustration). It breeds in mid- and high-latitude regions of Eurasia, from Europe and North Africa in the west to Japan in the east, and those in the north migrate slightly south in winter. It is a diurnal forest raptor, not living in grasslands or desert areas. Its upperparts are dark gray-blue and its underparts gray-white, with reddish-brown stripes in males and dark brown stripes in females. As with many other accipitridae birds, the female is slightly larger, reaching a total length of about 39 cm, while the male is about 31 cm. In the past, the large female was called a sparrowhawk and the small male a hawk.
