Sŏ Kyŏng‐dŏk (English spelling)

A scholar of the Yi Dynasty of Korea. His pen name was Kaku, and his pen names were Fujae and Hwadam. He was from Tangcheng. At the age of 18, he was deeply moved by reading the section on the study of things in the Great Learning, and thereafter had no interest in government service. He built a hermitage in Hwadam, Kaesong, and spent his life reading, contemplating, and traveling. He advocated Qi monism, which regards the great void as the origin of the universe as Qi, and is considered a pioneer of the theory of the main Qi. He is contrasted with Kaijae Li En-di (1491-1553), a pioneer of the theory of the main Qi, who developed his own theory with an emphasis on the theory of Li Qi by Zhu Xi. His works include the Hwadam Collection.

朝鮮，李朝の学者。字は可久。号は復斎，花潭。唐城の人。18歳のとき《大学》の格物窮理条を読んで感動，以後仕官には意を用いず，開城の花潭に庵を建て，読書思索と遊歴の一生を送った。宇宙の根源としての大虚を気ととらえる気一元論を唱え，〈主気論〉の先駆者とされ，朱熹（しゆき）の理気論の理に重点を置いて自説を展開した〈主理論〉の先駆者晦斎李彦迪（りげんてき）(1491‐1553)と対照される。著書に《花潭集》がある。
