A perennial plant of the Crassulaceae family (APG classification: Crassulaceae). Native to Japan, it grows wild on Shodoshima Island, but is usually cultivated in pots for decorative purposes. The stems grow in clusters from rhizomes, droop as they grow, and turn red. They are about 20 cm long and have few branches. The leaves are fleshy, fan-shaped, and grow in whorls of three. They are about 2 cm long, have blunt sawtooth edges, and are green with a powdery white tinge. From October to November, the top of the stems bears a large number of small pale pink flowers in a spherical shape. The flowers have five sepals and petals, and ten stamens. Some leaves have yellow spots. The closely related Hidakamisebaya grows wild in Hokkaido, with slightly upright stems and opposite leaves. It is easy to grow, using well-drained soil containing leaf mold and plenty of sunlight. It can be propagated by division, but cuttings can also be used.
