Overflow dike

Japanese: 越流堤 - えつりゅうてい
Overflow dike
A levee that is built lower in parts to allow water to overflow from there and keep the river water level constant when the water volume increases temporarily during floods. The purpose is to reduce flood damage in downstream plains. The overflowing water is stored in a temporary reservoir and a flood control reservoir, and is released when the water level drops.
