…According to the common theory, the meaning of the word Upanishad is derived from the Sanskrit verb upa-ni-sad, meaning to sit nearby, and came to refer to the secret teachings that are passed on from master to disciple while sitting opposite each other, and further to the documents that contain such teachings. For this reason, Upanishad is also translated as a book of secret teachings. There are more than 200 Upanishads in existence, but the 14 to 17 that are ancient and important in content are called the Old Upanishads. …
