…The southern part of the ice shelf reaches almost 77°S and is bordered by the Filchner and Ronne ice shelves. In February 1823, the British captain James Weddell (1787-1834) entered this area and named it the George IV Sea, but later it was named after its discoverer. Antarctica is almost entirely within the Antarctic Circle, and is divided into East Antarctica (also called Great Antarctica), an old continental mass belonging to the Eastern Hemisphere, and West Antarctica (Little Antarctica), which is geologically newer, by the Transantarctic Mountains. The Ross Sea intrudes deeply into the Pacific Ocean, and the Weddell Sea into the Atlantic Ocean. The Antarctic Peninsula extends from West Antarctica toward South America.
