Menyat' (English spelling)

[history]
The city's name was first confirmed in historical documents in connection with the battle between the Principality of Polotsk and the Grand Duchy of Kievan Rus in 1067, but its origins are thought to date back much further, as a stopover point on the trade route between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea. The name Minsk is said to derive from the word "menyat'", meaning to trade. In 1101 it became the capital of the Principality of Minsk, but in the 14th century it came under the control of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
