Boehm
Austrian conductor. Born in Graz, he graduated from the conservatory there and studied in Vienna. He became a rehearsal conductor at the opera house in his hometown and made his debut in 1917. In 1921, he was invited by B. Walter and others to become the conductor of the Munich State Opera, where he was trained by Walter for six years. After working at opera houses in Darmstadt and Hamburg, he became the general music director of the Dresden State Opera from 1934 to 1943. There he formed a friendship with R. Strauss and premiered the operas Die Silente (1935) and Daphne (1938). He later served as the general music director of the Vienna State Opera twice, from 1943 to 1945 and from 1954 to 1956, and continued to play a central role in the Austrian music world. His main repertoire consisted of German and Austrian orchestral works and operas from Mozart to Berg, and he left behind many simple and elegant performances. He first came to Japan in 1963 with the Berlin State Opera, and has since visited three times with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. → Backhaus → Related topics Sawallisch | Schwarzkopf | Metropolitan Opera
