Fluxus - Furukusasu (English spelling) Fluxus

Japanese: フルクサス - ふるくさす(英語表記)Fluxus
Fluxus - Furukusasu (English spelling) Fluxus

Fluxus was an expressive movement that developed in New York in the 1960s. It was named by George Maciunas (1931-1978) in 1961. The word Fluxus means flow, constant change, and the release of excrement. As the name suggests, the members and activities were fluid, and by the early 1970s artists from around the world, such as La Monte Young, Yoko Ono, Joseph Beuys, and Nam June Paik, were involved in various genre-transcending expressions such as events, concerts, and publications. Fluxus' activities had a strong aspect of disrupting the existing concept of art as something lofty and irreplaceable, such as attempting to deny the privileged originality of artists and introducing practical jokes into expression. In this sense, Fluxus is linked to art world movements that occurred in the same era, such as Neo-Dada and Happenings. In particular, a series of works based on ideas provided by artists, in which boxes were packed with small, meaningless objects and sold at low prices by mail order, are an example that shows the nature of this movement. The wide-ranging activities of this movement influenced conceptual art and performance art even after the movement came to an end.
