A lizard of the order Squamata, family Gekkonidae, class Reptilia. Also known as the Tokay. It is one of the largest species of gecko, found in India, Southeast Asia, Indochina, and southern China, and can reach a total length of 25 to 30 centimeters. The back of the body is covered with fine scales, with large granular scales scattered throughout. It has a large head and powerful jaws, and when an enemy approaches, it opens its mouth wide and yells to threaten it. The inside of its mouth is a purplish pink color that has an intimidating effect, but it also has a strong biting force. Its English name comes from the loud "Tokay" sound it makes in succession at night, and in Southeast Asia, hearing a Tokay in a house is welcomed as a sign of happiness. It is oviparous, laying eggs two at a time by attaching them to walls, etc. It feeds on insects, other geckos, and small birds. In Southeast Asia, this species is opened and dried, and in Hong Kong, it is soaked in distilled liquor and used as a folk medicine.
