A strait leading to the Gulf of Aden at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. Meaning "Gate of Lamentation" in Arabic, it is a key point on the maritime trade route from the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. It is about 30 km wide and 200-300 m deep. On the west coast are Eritrea and Djibouti. Perim Island (also called Barim Island), located about 3.5 km off the east coast from Yemen's Cape Sheikh Said, is Yemeni territory. Until around 1920, when the port of Aden was developed, it was a busy port for loading fuel for ships, but now it appears to be an important military base where the Yemeni army is stationed.
