Tokudaiji Sanenori

Grand Chamberlain to Emperor Meiji. Born on December 6, 10th year of Tenpo, as the eldest son of Minister of the Right Tokudaiji Kin'ito. Older brother of Saionji Kinmochi. In 1862 (Bunkyu 2), he became provisional Chunagon and official in charge of national affairs, and in the following year, 1863, he was promoted to the Council of Ministers, but was dismissed in the August 18th Coup of the same year due to his activities as a Sonnō-jō (revere the expeditionary force against the Emperor and the expulsion of all). After the restoration of imperial rule in 1868 (Meiji 1), he became an advisor to the new government, then a councilor, and concurrently held the posts of Governor-General of the Domestic Affairs. In 1870, he traveled to the Yamaguchi domain as a pacifying envoy during the desertion turmoil. In 1871, he joined the Imperial Household Ministry as Grand Chamberlain, and from then on, except for a short period (August 1877 to March 1884), he served in that position until the death of Emperor Meiji. During this time, he also held the positions of Minister of the Imperial Household, Director of the Peerage Bureau, and Minister of the Interior. In 1911 (Meiji 44), he was made a duke. He died on June 4, 1919.
