An annual plant of the Brassicaceae family native to China (illustration). It is also called Shikinsai (purple gold leaf), O-araseitou (big-hearted daisy), or Murasakihanana (purple-flowered daisy). In April, the branches split and produce beautiful clusters of four-petaled purple flowers, so it is often planted in flower beds and gardens. It became widely known after World War II, but it had already been introduced to Japan around 1935. It is also known as Hanakon (spicy radish), but this name was already given to Hesperis matronalis L., which is a different genus. After flowering, the seeds ripen and fall off, spreading out and blooming in the area. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
