Numismatics (Kosengaku) ​​- numismatics
Numismatics is the study of currency and medals from ancient to modern times. Medals are commemorative plaques or badges made to commemorate certain events or individuals. Numismatics studies the shape, size, inscriptions, designs, metallic components, functions, and artistic value of medals. With regard to currency in particular, issues include its units and weight, the theories and laws that govern it, and the relationships between different groups. Numismatics plays a supporting role to history, mythology, geography, art history, and other disciplines.

古代から近代にいたるまでの貨幣とメダルを取り扱う学問。メダルとは記念牌(はい)や徽章(きしよう)の類で,ある事件や人物を記念して作られたもの。古銭学はこれらの形や大きさ,銘文や意匠,成分の金属,機能,芸術的価値などを研究の対象とする。とくに貨幣では,その単位や重量,それを支配している理論や法則,異なったグループ間の相互関係などが問題となる。古銭学は歴史学,神話学,地理学,美術史学などの補助的役割を果たす。
