Japanese: 隼人 - はやと
Hayato
Located in the northeastern part of Kagoshima Prefecture, this is the former area of Kirishima City in the mid-western part of the city. It is on the north coast of Kagoshima Bay. It was incorporated as a town in 1929. In 1954, it merged with Hinatayama Town and Shimizu Village to form Hayato Hinatayama Town, and in 1957, it was restored to Hayato Town. In 2005, it merged with Kokubu City, Mizobe Town, Yokogawa Town, Makizono Town, Kirishima Town, and Fukuyama Town to form Kirishima City. Hamano City flourished as a commercial port during the Edo period, and was the leading distribution center for goods in the northern part of Kagoshima Bay. It produces rice and sweet potatoes, mainly in the alluvial plains on the bay coast, and is famous for tobacco (Kokubu Tobacco) and radishes for pickling. Textile and electrical factories also moved in, and in 1984, it was designated as the Kokubu Hayato Technopolis together with Kokubu City. There are many hot springs along the Amorigawa River, including the Hinatayama Onsen in the middle reaches and the Shinkawa Valley Onsen Village in the upper reaches. The surrounding area is said to be the residence of the ancient tribe of Hayato, and is home to the Hayatozuka mound (a nationally designated historic site).

Hayato is Hayato

A tribe that lived in southern Kyushu in ancient times. They mainly lived in the Osumi and Satsuma regions. Since the mid-5th century, they have been subordinate to the Yamato Imperial Court, and because they were brave and agile, they were conscripted to serve as guards at the Imperial gates and as vanguards for imperial journeys. Under the Taiho Code, the Hayato no tsukasa was established, and they served the Imperial Court in six-year rotations, after which they were allowed to settle in Kinai, Omi, Harima, etc. On the other hand, in the early 8th century, the Hayato rebelled, and troops were frequently sent to suppress them, but after Dazaifu officials were appointed as kokushi in Osumi and Satsuma, they were gradually incorporated into the Ritsuryo ruling system.
