Takeji Fujishima

Western-style painter. Born in Kagoshima on September 18, 1867. He studied Japanese painting from middle school, and moved to Tokyo to become a student of Kawabata Gyokusho. He later switched to Western-style painting, studying under Soyama Yukihiko, Matsuoka Hisashi, and Yamamoto Hosui, and in 1891 (Meiji 24), he became a member of the Meiji Art Association. In 1896, he became an assistant professor in the Western painting department at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and a member of the Hakuba-kai. He was influenced by Kuroda Seiki's plein air school, but eventually moved to romanticism and produced works such as "Butterfly." In 1905, he went to France as a student sponsored by the Ministry of Education, studying under Cormon at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, before transferring to Rome. His representative works from his time abroad include "Black Fan" (Important Cultural Property) and "Chochara." He returned to Japan in 1917 and exhibited 27 works he had created in Europe at the Hakuba-kai Exhibition. He also became a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he devoted himself to guiding students in the Western painting department for over 30 years. He also taught at the Hongo Western Painting Institute and the Kawabata Art School. In 1918 (Taisho 2), he exhibited "Utsutsu" at the Bunten Exhibition and won third prize. He became a judge for the Bunten and Teiten Exhibitions. After demonstrating his decorative style in works such as "Hokei," he traveled extensively to the sea and mountains during the Showa period, completing bold and gorgeous modern oil paintings in works such as "Tokai Kyokukou" and "Kouto Ten." In 1934, he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1934 (Showa 9), he received the first Order of Culture and became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Tokyo on March 19, 1943.
