Paintings created mainly in the United States from the early 1960s to the early 1970s, featuring large colored surfaces, simple shapes, and repeated patterns. The term means "minimal art." It is so named because it is based on the minimum basic elements of design, such as monochromatic colors, flat paint, and simple geometric shapes. It was named by the American critic Barbara Rose. It can be considered a reaction against the vulgarity of postwar American expressionism and popular culture, such as pop art. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
