A ground wire is a conductor that is installed on a steel tower or pole to protect overhead transmission and distribution lines from direct and induced lightning strikes. In general, overhead ground wires can reduce the induced voltage caused by lightning by about half due to their electrostatic shielding effect, so they are effective in preventing induced lightning for low-voltage transmission and distribution lines. For transmission lines of 110 kV or more, they serve more as a protection against direct lightning strikes than as a shield, and the Whitehead-Armstrong theory is used for their installation.
