Died: April 2, 1885. Chalchuapa. Guatemalan politician. President (in office 1873-85). Military staff officer from 1871-73. In 1873 he became president and implemented liberal reforms. He subjugated the local upper class, suppressed the Catholic Church, eliminated the interference of churches and priests in politics and economics, and promoted the development of the press, communications, transportation, and education. Externally, he worked hard to restore the Central American Federation, and died in the Battle of Chalchuapa during the invasion of neighboring El Salvador.

Chilean novelist. Educated in Lima, Peru, he ran away from home and wandered around northern Chile before becoming a novelist. His representative works include the naturalistic El niño que enloqueció de amor (1915), Un perdido (18), and The Foolish Monk (22).

チリの小説家。ペルーのリマで教育を受けたが，家出してチリ北部を放浪したのち小説家となった。代表的な作品は自然主義の流れをくむ『恋に狂った少年』 El niño que enloqueció de amor (1915) ，『だめな男』 Un perdido (18) ，『愚かな修道士』 El hermano asno (22) 。
