Born: 1835. San Lorenzo Died: April 2, 1885. Chalchuapa. Guatemalan politician. President (in office 1873-85). Military staff officer from 1871-73. In 1873 he became president and implemented liberal reforms. He subjugated the local upper class, suppressed the Catholic Church, eliminated the interference of churches and priests in politics and economics, and promoted the development of the press, communications, transportation, and education. Externally, he worked hard to restore the Central American Federation, and died in the Battle of Chalchuapa during the invasion of neighboring El Salvador. Barioth |
