A general term for sliding door paintings and folding screen paintings. There are many different types of paintings, but folding screen works have long been loved in Japan as large-scale paintings that brighten up living spaces. The Todaiji Donations List, a list of the belongings donated to the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple after the death of Emperor Shomu in 756 (Tenpyo-Shoho 8), contains detailed records of the subjects and styles of 100 folding screens, including the Bird Feather Standing Woman Folding Screen, which is currently preserved in the Shosoin Repository, as well as many other folding screens of kyokechi and rokechi. Among these are 21 folding screens of paintings, and it is known that folding screen paintings with a variety of Chinese themes, such as landscapes and genre paintings, were frequently imported at the time.
