Shoheizaka Academy

Shoheizaka Academy
A place of learning for the Edo Shogunate, a directly controlled school. Also called Shoheiko. In 1691, Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi moved the Hayashi family private school, along with the church, from Shinobugaoka in Ueno, Edo to Yushima, and it gradually became an official school. It was the head temple of the Shogunate's education, and the Hayashi family presided over it as the head of the university, lecturing on Neo-Confucianism. When the Kansei era banned heretical learning, the school was renamed from Shoheiko to Shoheizaka Gakumonsho, and the educational system that was dependent on the Hayashi family was reformed. In 1792, accommodation for instructors and lecture halls were built, and it was developed into a school. In addition to the children of samurai, the general public was allowed to attend classes. After the Meiji Restoration, it was renamed Shohei Gakko and then Daigakko, but was abolished in 1871. →Yushima Seido→Related itemsAsaka Gonsai|Otsuki Iwakei|Okada Kansen|Private school|New edition of the Sagami Province Topography|New edition of the Musashino Topography|University Head|Cabinet Library|Hayashi Razan
