Epithelium

〘Noun〙① A layer of cells that covers the outer surface of an animal's body, or the surface of a body cavity or organ. The tissue that constitutes it is called epithelial tissue, and its cells are called epithelial cells. ※Shiji Sho (1477) vol. 11 "The epithelium is prone to sores and ulcers." ② Generally, the skin that covers the surface of plants. ※Yougaku Dokusho (1887)〈Nishimura Tei〉vol. 6 "Remove it from the water and scrape off the rough epithelium with a small knife."
