Prosper Jolyot de Crébillon (1674-1762) was a French tragic writer. Born in Dijon, he made his debut with Idomene in 1705. His first work already showed a tendency towards horror as a theatrical effect, and his method of dealing with cruel incidents, which he hoped to bring a breath of fresh air to French tragedy after Racine, led to considerable success in subsequent works such as Atlée and Tiesto (1707), Elector (1708), and especially Radamisto and Zenobia (1711).
