〘Noun〙 (jack)① One of the picture cards in playing cards. A card higher than 10 and lower than queen. It has a picture of a young man on it, and is said to represent a courtier or soldier, as opposed to a king or queen. ※Kure no Nijuhachika (1898)〈Uchida Roan〉3 "As soon as he grasped the tile, he fired an arrow without a moment's hesitation, and the jack flew up into the ceiling"② To plug in an electrical appliance. 〔Pocket Book of Electrical Engineering (1928)〕③ ⇒jack①④ (Originally a nickname for John, the most common male name in England) A young man. By extension, a British sailor.
