1035‐1105 Prime Minister of the Northern Song Dynasty in China. His courtesy name was Zihou. His domicile was Pucheng in Jianzhou (Fujian Province), and he became a Jinshi in the 4th year of the Jiayou era (1059). He was recognized by Wang Anshi as a knowledgeable and capable official, and was appointed to the Law Office, one of the three central offices of the New Law Department. He was promoted to Minister of Finance in 1074 (7th year of the Xining era), and to Deputy Prime Minister in 1080. During this time, he failed to take measures against the ethnic minorities in Hunan Province, leaving a mark of disaster. During the time of the Old Law Party under Yuanyou (1086-93), he was demoted to the provinces, but returned to power when Zhezong took personal control, and played an active role as the leader of the New Law Party during the Shaosheng era (1094-97). He suppressed the Old Law Party together with Cai Jing and others. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
