This was a case in which the chemical fertilizer company Showa Denko (president: Setsuzou Hinohara) paid large amounts of bribes to politicians in order to obtain loans from the Reconstruction Finance Bank. After June 1948, 44 people, including Hinohara, Prime Minister Hitoshi Ashida, and Deputy Prime Minister Suehiro Nishio, were indicted, and the Ashida Cabinet resigned en masse.
