Poisoning from ethyl alcohol can be divided into acute and chronic poisoning, but the term chronic poisoning is gradually falling out of use in recent years. This is because when ethyl alcohol contained in alcoholic beverages is consumed continuously, and the amount exceeds the normal amount, or abnormal consumption is repeated ("alcohol abuse"), a state occurs in which it becomes impossible to stop drinking alcoholic beverages, but this is thought to be caused by a biological change different from that in acute poisoning, and so the term "dependence" has been proposed by a WHO expert committee to distinguish it from toxic symptoms.
