Zhào gōng (English spelling)

Japanese: 召公 - しょうこう（英語表記）Zhào gōng

A meritorious official at the founding of the Western Zhou dynasty in ancient China. His name was Seki. He was also called the Duke of Zhou. It is said that his surname was Princess, but it is more likely that his name came from a noble family member from the Yin dynasty. He assisted King Wu of Zhou in destroying the Yin dynasty, and was given the title of governor of Yan for his achievements. However, he sent members of his family to Yan, and Duke Seki himself likely remained in the Zhou capital. During the reign of King Cheng, he was appointed one of the Three Dukes, and was entrusted with the rule of Shaanxi, where he ruled well. It is also said that the chapters of the Book of Songs, Zhao Nan, are songs praising him.

中国古代，西周建国のさいの功臣。名は奭（せき）。周公と並称される。姫（き）姓だともいうが，むしろ殷代の雄族の召方（しようほう）に出ると考えるべきであろう。周の武王を助けて殷を滅ぼし，その功績により燕に封ぜられた。しかし燕へは一族の者を行かせ，召公自身は周都にとどまったのであろう。成王の時代には三公の職につき，陝西の地の支配をゆだねられて善政を敷いた。《詩経》〈召南〉の諸篇はそれをたたえた歌だともされる。
