...The name Gothic comes from the criticism of Italian Renaissance architects such as Vasari that they believed medieval architecture was brought about by the barbarian Goths, but since the 19th century, it has come to be used as a term in art history to refer to a style of medieval art in Western Europe. It was Northern France that gave this medieval art a clear form, as it was called "opus francigenum," but since it is a whole Western European phenomenon, it is too narrow to say that it is a "medieval French style."
