A long men's jacket worn by the court nobility during the reign of Louis XIV. It is fitted to the body from the back to the torso, narrows at the torso, and gracefully flares from the waist to the hem. The pleats on both sides of the hem, along with the back slit, come from the need for horseback riding. The predecessor to this garment was a cloak called a cavalryman's or musketeer's coat. The front opening is densely lined with buttons and buttonholes decorated with braid or embroidery. It is usually fastened only at the torso, revealing a vest that was an adaptation of the traditional pourpoin. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
