Aquatint

A type of etching copperplate invented in the 18th century. Resin powder is sprinkled on the plate, heated to set it, and unnecessary parts are protected from corrosion with varnish or other coatings before being immersed in an etching solution. The acid penetrates only the gaps between the grains, creating matte spots on the plate's surface. 18世紀に発明された腐食銅版画の一種。版面に樹脂の粉をふり，熱を加えて定着させ，不必要な部分をワニス等で防食しておいて腐食液に浸すと，粒のすき間だけを酸が侵して版面に梨地の斑点ができる。腐食時間の差，粉の散布の密粗等で濃淡の変化をつける。
