Ichinomiya

Japanese: 一宮 - いちのみや

A type of shrine rank that emerged from the end of ancient times to the beginning of the Middle Ages. It seems to have been the name given to the shrine in each province that had the deepest history, was the most revered, and had the largest economic base. Ninomiya and Sannomiya were also created in succession, but these were not officially designated by the Jingikan or provincial governors. As time went on, there were cases of alternation and coexistence, and up until the early modern period, names such as Ichinomiya and Ninomiya came into existence within a certain area such as a province or a county. The Dai-Nihon-koku Ichinomiya-ki (Gunsho Ruiju Shinto Section) lists the Ichinomiya for each province and the deities enshrined there. There are also many cases where the names became the names of the areas around where shrines are located, such as Ichinomiya City in Aichi Prefecture, which is derived from the fact that Masumida Shrine, the Ichinomiya of Owari Province, is located there.

Ichinomiya

A district in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture. A former town in Mitsu District. The southern tip of the Kibi Plateau borders the Okayama Plain, and is the location of Bizen Ichinomiya Kibitsuhiko Shrine.

古代末期から中世初頭にかけて発生した一種の社格。諸国において由緒が深く，最も崇敬を集め，経済的基盤も大きかった神社を称したようで，以下順次二宮・三宮も生じたが，神祇官や国司が公式に定めたものではない。時代が下るとともに交替や並立がみられる場合もあり，近世に至るまで国のほか郡など一定地域内における一宮・二宮などの称もできた。国ごとの一宮をあげ，祭神を記したものに《大日本国一宮記》（《群書類従》神祇部）がある。なお尾張国一宮の真清田(ますみだ)神社が鎮座することに由来する愛知県一宮市など，鎮座地一帯の地名となった例も多い。
