A publishing company founded in 1922 by Oga Yoshihiro (1897-1938), it is the second largest general publisher after Kodansha. It started out by publishing educational magazines for elementary school students by grade, and then expanded to magazines for young children and teachers, as well as various monthly and weekly magazines, with the number of titles currently exceeding 50. In particular, its comic magazine sales are on a par with Shueisha and Kodansha. In addition to publishing general books, picture books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc., it also has a large share of the character division, including Doraemon and Pokemon.
