... This slave trade encouraged armed conflict among coastal tribes for the purpose of slave hunting, and as a result, the Kingdom of Kongo steadily declined. In the late 16th century, when the Jaga (Yaga) tribe invaded, the Kingdom of Kongo was supported by Portuguese troops, and the equal relationship between the two countries came to an end. In 1665, the Portuguese army attacked the Kingdom of Kongo and killed the then King Antonio I (reigned 1661-65), which led to the severing of relations between the two countries and the Kingdom of Kongo itself being devastated. In the 19th century, the slave trade declined, and Europeans actively explored the interior of Africa. At the end of the century, the race to divide up Africa into colonies began in earnest. ...
