Year of death: 1875 (Meiji 8) Year of birth: 1844 A representative photographer of the late Edo and Meiji periods. Born in Nagasaki. He learned the basics of chemistry at the laboratory of Dutch physician Pompe, and mastered photography under Ueno Hikoma. He opened a photography studio in Osaka in 1868, and after gaining a good reputation he expanded to Yokohama and Tokyo, before settling in Asakusa. Some of his major achievements include being the first photographer to be appointed as a purveyor to the Imperial Household Ministry, and the first photographer to take portraits of the Emperor. He also demonstrated his talent in photographing scenery and scenic spots around the country, and many of his works were exported as albums introducing Japan.
