In medieval Europe, this law developed to regulate the relationship between manorial lords and their subjects, especially the subjects' obligations to the lords, and the relationships between the subjects themselves. Manorial law was established when the head of the subjects was required to make a ruling on customary law every year in response to questions from manorial officials called "inquistio." Since the manorial court's decisions took the form of a declaration of law (Rechtsweistümer), in its final form manorial law was extremely binding on the lords. Around the time when the Beistümer (→Weistüm), a record of the rural law of manors, began to be compiled, manorial law gradually changed in quality.
