A maritime ethnic group that spread from Zhejiang Province in China to Indochina. They are collectively known as the Baiyue. The Yue (Ou Yue) practiced painting their bodies and cutting their hair. They founded their nation in Kuaiji during the Spring and Autumn Period, and after their downfall around 306 BCE, they scattered to various places. From the Qin to the Han dynasties, the Ouyue, Minyue, and Nanyue became independent in the lower reaches of the Oujiang, Minjiang, and Pearl Rivers, respectively, but were suppressed by Emperor Wu of Han. The Shanyue were active during the Three Kingdoms period, centering around Danyang (Jiangsu Province). The Luoyue, who moved south to the Song Khoi River basin, became independent during the Five Dynasties and early Song Dynasty and prospered as a Vietnamese ethnic group.
