The name "kue" was originally used in Kochi Prefecture, Osaka Prefecture, and Wakayama Prefecture, and is called "kuemasu" in Futagi Island, Mie Prefecture, "kyomodori" in Wakayama Prefecture, and "ara" in Shimonoseki. In Kochi Prefecture, the juveniles of this species are called "aona" or "igisu." …

...In Lake Hamana, they are called egodai, in the Seto Inland Sea and Kochi Prefecture, they are called kotai, and in Kagoshima Prefecture, they are called kawakodai. In Nikijima, Mie Prefecture, they are called kyomodori, which is said to mean that they were sent to Kyoto as sea bream but were sent back as they were not. In Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, small ones are called machimawari because they are unsalable and go around town selling them...
