…In 1816, he joined the Fenambule theater, which opened on the Boulevard de la Temple in Paris, and re-created the role of a melancholic clown with white face and white costume, becoming a Parisian favorite. His performance, influenced by the enthusiastic support of the literary critic and novelist Jules-Gabriel Janin (1804-1874), who later wrote his biographer, led many literary figures of the time to become patrons of the Fenambule, and C. Nodier and Champfleury even provided him with scripts. The role of Baptiste, played by JL Barraud in M. Carné's film Les Enfants du Paradis, faithfully conveys Debureau's popularity at the Fenambule at the time. …
