Subdwarf

Subdwarf

They are stars similar to dwarf stars (main sequence stars) and are classified as luminosity class VI. Historically, several stars thought to be of spectral type A, but fainter than A-type main sequence stars, were discovered in the 1930s by American W.S. Adams. These stars were called "subdwarfs", but subsequent research revealed that they are "metal-poor stars" with metal content much lower than normal stars. Many of them belong to the spectral types F, G, and K.

Although these stars are still conventionally called subdwarfs, in reality they are old stars belonging to Population II. Among them, the later types form the main sequence of Population II, and are in fact about one magnitude fainter than the main sequence stars of Population I. Subdwarfs that are earlier than them are thought to have already left the main sequence and evolved further, passing through giant stars.
