Harvesting - Harvesting

An object held by a dancer in a Shinto ritual art such as Kagura. It can also be written as torimono or tsukumono. Mikagura at the Imperial Court consists of a section on collecting objects and a section on front decorations. The section on collecting objects includes nine items: sakaki (a branch of a tree), mitengura (a sacred offering), tsue (a walking stick), sasa (a bamboo grass), bow, tsurugi (a sword), hoko (a spear), hisago (a ladle), and kazura (a kudzu). The main focus is singing songs about the objects, and there is no dancing, but the significance lies in singing songs related to the objects to accompany them. The objects were originally objects that divine spirits would reside in. Even in folk Kagura, the basic form was to dance while holding the objects. Sakaki (a branch of a tree), mitengura (a sacred offering), and fans are the most commonly used, followed by canes, bows, swords, and trays. In some places, such as Shiiba Kagura in Miyazaki Prefecture, the performers hold items such as a bow or a sacred wand, chant a shogyo (chanting) that explains the origin of the god, and summon the god to the item before dancing.
