An old town in Higashiiwai County, in the southern part of the Kitakami Highlands, in southern Iwate Prefecture. In the early modern period, it was an old post town on the Imaizumi Highway, which ran between Ichinoseki and Rikuzentakata. The town developed in Surisawa along the Ofunato Line. The mountainous area has long been a major producer of tobacco leaves, and sericulture is also practiced, but in recent years, diversified farming such as rice paddy, dairy farming, apples, and shiitake mushrooms has become mainstream. In September 2005, it was incorporated into Ichinoseki City along with Hanaizumi Town in Nishiiwai County, Senmaya Town, Higashiyama Town, Murone Village, and Kawasaki Village in Higashiiwai County. 278.71 km2 .
