An old town in Higashiiwai County, in the southern part of the Kitakami Highlands, in southern Iwate Prefecture. In the early modern period, it was an old post town on the Imaizumi Highway, which ran between Ichinoseki and Rikuzentakata. The town developed in Surisawa along the Ofunato Line. The mountainous area has long been a major producer of tobacco leaves, and sericulture is also practiced, but in recent years, diversified farming such as rice paddy, dairy farming, apples, and shiitake mushrooms has become mainstream. In September 2005, it was incorporated into Ichinoseki City along with Hanaizumi Town in Nishiiwai County, Senmaya Town, Higashiyama Town, Murone Village, and Kawasaki Village in Higashiiwai County. 278.71 km2 . Population 17,714 (2003).

An old town in Ohara County, eastern Shimane Prefecture. It occupies the Aka River basin, a tributary of the Hii River, and the surrounding mountainous areas, and is passed through by the Kisuki Line. The central settlement flourished as a market town where the Rokusai Market was held. Wagyu beef is raised, and melons, tea, and other produce are cultivated. Ushio Hot Springs is located here. The molybdenum mine, which once produced 80% of the nation's molybdenum production, has closed. In November 2004, it merged with Kamo Town and Kisuki Town in Ohara County, and Mitoya Town, Kakeya Town, and Yoshida Village in Iishiro County, to become Unnan City. Area: 152.23 km2 . Population: 14,759 (2003).

A former town in Ogasagun facing the Enshu Sea in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture. Rice, vegetables, and greenhouses for melons and strawberries are cultivated here, and tea and tobacco are also produced. In addition to the local industries of iron and textiles, chemical plants are located on the coast. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Osukacho, Ogasagun, and Kakegawa City. 45.99 km2 . Population: 20,937 (2003).

岩手県南部,北上高地南部の東磐井(ひがしいわい)郡の旧町。近世には一関〜陸前高田間を通じる今泉街道の旧宿場町であった。大船渡(おおふなと)線に沿う摺沢(すりさわ)に市街が発達。山地が広く,古くから葉タバコの産が多く,養蚕も行われるが,近年は水稲や酪農,リンゴ,シイタケなどの複合経営が主流。2005年9月西磐井郡花泉町,東磐井郡千厩町,東山町,室根村,川崎村と一関市へ編入。278.71km2。1万7714人(2003)。

島根県東部,大原郡の旧町。斐伊(ひい)川の支流赤川流域と周辺山地を占め,木次(きすき)線が通じる。中心集落は,六斎市の開かれる市場町として栄えた。和牛飼育,メロン,茶などの栽培を行う。海潮(うしお)温泉がある。かつて全国生産の80%を産したモリブデン鉱山は閉山。2004年11月大原郡加茂町,木次町,飯石郡三刀屋町,掛合町,吉田村と合併し市制,雲南市となる。152.23km2。1万4759人(2003)。

静岡県の南西部,遠州灘に面する小笠郡の旧町。米作,野菜栽培とメロン,イチゴなどの施設園芸が行われ,茶,タバコも産する。地場産業の鉄工業,繊維工業に加え,海岸部には化学工場などが立地。2005年4月小笠郡大須賀町と掛川市へ編入。45.99km2。2万937人(2003)。
