Japanese: 眼底 - がんてい

The fundus is literally the name for all the tissues at the bottom (deep) of the eyeball, and includes tissues such as the retina, choroid, vitreous humor, and optic disc.
These tissues are examined by funduscopy.
The retina is an important tissue that is equivalent to the film in a camera, and if it becomes diseased and bleeding or edema (swelling) occurs, it will directly affect vision.
The choroid is a tissue rich in blood vessels and pigments that lies further back than the retina, and when you look at the fundus, you can see the blood vessels here through the retina. The choroid carries nutrients to the retina, and if it becomes diseased, it often has a negative effect on the retina as well.
The vitreous is a transparent tissue made up of 99% water. It can become cloudy or shrink depending on illness.
The optic disc is the tissue at the entrance to the optic nerve, and it often becomes swollen or pale due to optic nerve diseases.

眼底とは文字どおり、眼球内の底（奥）のほうにある組織全体に対する名称で、網膜（もうまく）、脈絡膜（みゃくらくまく）、硝子体（しょうしたい）、視神経乳頭（ししんけいにゅうとう）といった組織があります。
　これらの組織は、眼底検査によって調べられます。
　網膜はカメラでいうとフィルムに相当するたいせつな組織で、ここが病気になって出血や浮腫（ふしゅ）（むくみ）などがおこると、視力に直接影響します。
　脈絡膜は網膜のさらに奥にある血管と色素に富んだ組織で、眼底を見ると、ここの血管が網膜から透けて見えます。脈絡膜は網膜に栄養分を運ぶはたらきをしており、ここが病気になると、網膜にも悪影響を与えることが少なくありません。
　硝子体は99％が水でできた透明な組織です。病気によって混濁したり、収縮したりします。
　視神経乳頭は視神経の入り口になる組織で、視神経の病気のためにしばしば浮腫（ふしゅ）をおこしたり、色が蒼白（そうはく）になったりします。
