Japan's sewerage systems are classified under the Sewerage Act into public sewerage systems, river-basin sewerage systems, urban sewerage systems, and other public sewerage systems. In addition to these, there are also private sewerage systems in housing complexes and housing developments that have facilities that treat both domestic wastewater and flush toilet wastewater (a method called combined treatment), in which case the treated water is discharged into the nearest drainage channel or river. Public sewerage systems are sewerage systems built and managed by a single local government, and come in two types: those that mainly remove sewage from urban areas (urban planning areas) and have a final treatment plant, and those that are connected to the sewer trunk line of a river-basin sewerage system. …
