Moroko is interpreted as meaning various young fish, or small, small fish. In fact, most of the names with the name Moroko, both in Japanese and dialect, refer to small, slender-bodied fish in the family Cyprinidae of the order Cypriniformes. There is no fish with the Japanese name Moroko. In dialect, Moroko refers to different types of fish depending on the region. Along the shores of Lake Biwa, it refers to the Hon Moroko, and is used in expressions such as Moroko fishing and Moroko hiki (pulling) (net). Therefore, in the Keihanshin area, it also includes cases such as "Moroko fishing at Lake Biwa."

モロコとは諸々の子(もろもろのこ),すなわち小型の雑魚の意と解される。事実,和名でも方言でもモロコの名のつくものはコイ目コイ科のうちで体の細長い小魚を指すものが大部分である。単にモロコという和名の魚はない。方言のモロコは地方によりその指す魚の種類が異なる。琵琶湖沿岸ではホンモロコのことで,モロコ釣り,モロコ曳(引)き(網)などという使い方をする。したがって京阪神で〈琵琶湖のモロコ釣り〉などという場合も含まれる。
